What does it mean to play by ear? Simply that the musician understands the fundamentals of diatonic harmony. To understand this, you just need to know a little about chords.

For example, in the Key of C Major we have 7 chords. These are: C Maj. D min. E min. F Maj. G Maj. A min. and B half-diminished.

Notice that these chords are lined up in order and that they are triads. Most harmonic theory in the western world gives a number to these chords using roman numerals. Simply put, we can call the C Major

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THESE CHORDS!

Now, once you familiarize yourself with these chords you get to learn something that most composers have know for centuries and that is certain chord progressions have tension and other’s don’t.

To play piano by ear, you need to learn the most frequently used chord progression and that is the 1-4-5 progression. To put it into chord terms it’s simply the C Major chord followed by the F Major chord and then the G Major chord.

You may be asking yourself why these chords are so important. You see it all has to do with the scale! When you play a C major scale you are defining the chords that can come from it. When we construct triads using this scale, the chords that are generated give a certain sound. Composers discovered that the most tension exists between the 1 and the 5 chords.

Now, the early composers prized tension because it meant that they could control how to build up to climax and how to release as well.

First, figure out what the left-hand is doing. This is the key to understanding what is being done by any piano player, no matter what the style. Let’s take New Age pianist David Lanz as an example. Lanz’s style usually revolves around a left hand that plays an ostinato pattern while the right hand improvises. Very few pianists base their compositions on the right-hand.

It has to do with the way the piano is structured. You have the bass notes and midrange section

First, you really have to identify what your goals are. Do you want to play classical piano pieces? If so, you’ll need someone who’s been trained to play this style. Fortunately, the classical style of piano playing has no shortage of piano teachers.

Do you want to play from fake books? If so, you’ll need to find a teacher who knows chords. These teachers exist and can be found as well. While not as abundant as the note reading classical teacher, the chord-based approach is being taught more and more these

The first thing you should do is check out your local yellow pages. Turn to “piano teachers” or “piano instruction” and you should see more than a few listings.

Look and then call the piano teachers on the ads that you think may work for you. When you get them on the phone, ask them if they work with adults, children or both. If both, and you’re an adult, ask them how much experience they have working with adults. They should have at least 5 years under their belt to begin working with you.

Also ask if they’ll give you a free introductory lesson. Most will do this for you but be prepared if the answer is no.

One chord I’m fond of is the 9th chord. All this means is that the ninth note of the scale is used to create the chord with. For example, a triad built from the C Major scale is spelled - c-e-g. If we add the seventh note in the scale (b) we get a seventh chord - C Major 7. It’s spelled - c-e-g-b. Simple enough.

Now if we continue up the scale we will hit the octave C. The next note after

The way most piano teachers handle this problem is to first show students where middle C is - and I agree this should be the first thing newbies learn. But after they learn this visual marker, it’s time to really make the piano keyboard easy to see. How? By showing students how to form chords.

Sure, you could spend your time learning every single note on the piano. And you’d probably still be confused as to how to make music. But if you learn a chord-based approach first, you’ll be able to see piano keys as chords instead of individual notes. And when this happens

What I have my students do is master something called the open position chord first. Using this chord gives you a unique perspective to keyboard harmony. Both hands are called into play as you play something called a seventh chord. Seventh chords are used by contemporary pianists to create a “modern” sound.

Why not gospel piano improvisation?

Is it not possible to improvise classical music, or sacred music, or any other kind of music?

Bach improvised many of his fugues and inventions while playing organ in church. Many others in all musical styles have improvised within the context of their own persuasion. So why study improvised jazz? Why not study improvised classical music, or improvised gospel music?

The answer is access.

Jazz piano improvisation is so much more accessible than is improvisation in other areas. Some classical pianists do improvise, but at performances they are generally expected to play Chopin or Debussy or Mozart, rather than to make up their own music. There are gospel pianists who do improvise, but the expectation of

And so jazz, far more than any other musical style to date, has become the music of improvisation. Of course.

Every pianist uses the same 88 notes of the keyboard. All music consists of some kind of melody, some kind of harmony, some kind of rhythm. Elements from one style can be transplanted to another style; in fact, this is happening all the time. Notice lately how much of contemporary pop music is flavored with elements from jazz, country-western, and even classical music. Cross-pollinization of styles abounds in contemporary music.

So improvisation can be studied

So next time you see or hear a jazz pianist play, pay close attention to what she or he is doing. Ask yourself what’s going on musically — what chords and chord progressions are being used, what rhythms are in play, and how the tune of a song is being altered as the pianist improvises the melody line.

He had placed quarters over her eyes held there by a cloth. He had tied her mouth shut with another cloth.

It was depressing.

When the morticians came, and in an apparent rough

The funeral was torture to me. My mother was crying and I was sad.

At Christmas time, Dad asked it we wanted a Christmas tree. I was eight years old and my brother was five. We knew that he didn t feel like Christmas and neither did we.

I told Dad that we were old enough to not have a tree.

It was our custom to put the tree up early. As the days passed to Christmas Eve, my brother and I became sadder by the minute.

A Christmas without a Christmas tree was not Christmas.

We had some sparse Christmases

One person who saw that was done was Jesse Evans. Jesse was an operatic singer and was then singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. (She later married a gentleman that became the president of the Mormon Church and her name was changed to Jesse Evans Smith.)

During the depression, Dad got a job as an accountant with the WPA. The WPA hired people of many professions to give them work when there was no work.

Dad was auditing a bank in Logan Utah when he read in the paper that he had been appointed to the position

But this Christmas was going to be dismal. We could have used Jesse with her loud voice and good cheer.

I felt sorry for my little brother, Don. He didn t seem to know what was going on.

Christmas Eve was Doldrumsville.

I remember looking out the window. Snow had just started to fall. That s when a dump truck pulled up in front of our house. It was full of Christmas trees. A man headed for our porch. I

I thought just maybe.

I looked up at Dad. So did my little brother, Don. Dad dug into his purse and paid the man and told him Merry Christmas. The man repeated the words and was off to another house. (I learned later that we were not the only family in the neighborhood to buy a tree from that man at the last minute.)

Elated, I worked on the wooden stand for the tree. Somehow I always got that job. I had

Out came the decorations.

We went to work.

Christmas returned to Dad. He got his excitement back and helped us to decorate the tree.
